The fourth edition of Frieze Los Angeles took place February 16-19 in Santa Monica Airport. It’s a new venue with two locations. The smaller (drop-off) location at Barker Hangar (West Side) hosted section Focus for younger galleries with up-and-coming and emerging artists and some big galleries too. Among my highlights are the Baert Gallery with ceramics by Sophie Wahlquist; L.A. Louver booth “American Exceptionalism” dedicated to works by Ed and Nancy Kienholz; Marianne Boesky – works by Jennifer Bartlett, “Fire” series. And a few-minute walk away from here, is the Tent (East Side), the second location, designed again by Kulapat Yantrasast. A few mega-galleries had solo-artist booths. Gagosian presented Rick Lowe, Anton Kern showed works of Brian Calvin and Jeffrey Deitch had a colorful “Living Room Theater” by Peter Shire.
Within the Frieze Week, the city had different art events. I attended an opening reception of the Santa Monica Art Museum, which celebrated its new space with a group show “Looking West.” Finally, I checked out the Getty Villa, which is part and original space of the Getty Museum. I highly recommend it.
