This May, Frieze New York returns to the Shed at Hudson Yards for the third time. With approximately 60 galleries on three floors the fair is manageable. Multiple booths present solo presentations. Hauser & Wirth features the late artist Jack Whitten, Gagosian spotlights its new addition, New York photographer Nan Goldin. One notable stand in the Frieze lineup is David Kordansky gallery. Zoe Weinberg, associate director of the gallery, introduces the work of Lauren Halsey, whose major installation on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is on view through October.
Hailing from Tehran, Dastan gallery showcases five female artists spanning generations. Dastan’s artist Mamali Shafahi, whose prominent work was turning heads at Frieze Los Angeles in February, explains the origin of gallery’s name, while Melika Zandi offers a glimpse into challenges Iranian women face.
In the Focus section, dedicated to galleries under 12 years old, Isabel Vegas from Tiwani Contemporary talks about its featured artist, Emma Prempeh. It’s a gallery’s debut at Frieze.
Digital art takes center stage at LG OLED lounge on top floor. NFT artist Six N. Five prepared special exhibition for the fair, called “Among the Sky.”
One of the new announcements at Frieze is the Frieze Artadia prize. Jessica Vaughn is the first recipient of the award for her thought-provoking work, “The Internet of Things.” The installation comprises prints of oversized envelopes, each representing returned letters from sites of commerce, entertainment, and public violence.
Frieze New York also emphasizes its commitment to social responsibility. The Artist Plate Project, a fundraiser for the Coalition for the Homeless, deserves special mention. Limited-edition plates, each priced at $250, not only serve as unique collectibles but also have the power to make a difference. The funds raised from the sale of these plates can feed up to 100 individuals, emphasizing the ability of art to address and contribute to pressing social issues.
